Sometimes life feels like this escalator scene: we’re halfway to where we want to go, then something happens, and suddenly we’re at a standstill — frozen, frustrated, and hoping someone else will fix it.
But getting unstuck is often much simpler than we imagine. This playful clip reminds us that progress doesn’t depend on the “machine” working — it begins the moment we choose to take even the smallest step forward.

Reflection Questions for Coaches
- When have you (or a client) felt “stuck on an escalator” — waiting for things to change instead of taking action?
- What beliefs or assumptions kept you (or your client) from moving forward?
- How might some light humor help shift a stuck moment into possibility?
- As a coach, how do you balance empathy for a client’s frustration with gentle encouragement toward action?
- How can you help a client recognize when they’re waiting on the ‘machine’ instead of choosing their next step?
Tips for Exiting the Escalator (Figuratively)
- Take one small step: Clarity comes from movement, not from waiting for perfect conditions.
- Challenge the script: Notice the story you’re telling yourself about why you can’t move forward. Is it true, or just familiar?
- Step outside the scene: Imagine watching yourself from the balcony. What’s obvious from that higher perspective that isn’t visible in the moment?”
- What would a wise person say or do?: Pause and ask yourself this question. Often the answer is right there waiting to be discovered.
- Invite support: Sometimes another voice — a colleague, coach, or friend — helps us see the obvious next step we’ve overlooked.
- Lighten the load: Humor disarms fear and stubbornness. When we can laugh at the stuckness, we create space for insight and new possibilities.
The escalator may stop, but we always have choices. By challenging assumptions, shifting our perspective, and even embracing humor, we create space for progress and possibility. As coaches, we can help our clients see that the next step is always within reach.
